Arthritis: Three delicious fruits to relieve arthritis pain and symptoms

Arthritis is a common condition which causes pain, inflammation and stiffness to certain joints.

In the UK, arthritis affects around 10 million people, of all ages.

These three fruits are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits, which can help painful joints, according to the Arthritis Foundation.

Diets high in these compounds are linked to decreased risk of the joint damage seen in early osteoarthritis

Avocados are high in monounsaturated fat, which has anti-inflammatory properties, and which gives the fruit its rich, creamy texture.

They are also a good source of vitamin E, which keeps the immune system healthy and helps reduce inflammation.

“Diets high in these compounds are linked to decreased risk of the joint damage seen in early osteoarthritis,” said the arthritis organisation.

Avocados also help raise levels of good cholesterol in the body, while lowering bad cholesterol levels.

Watermelon has shown to reduce C-reactive protein in studies of the fruit.

C-reactive protein is a protein found in blood plasma, whose levels rise in response to inflammation.

The fruit is also high in the carotenoid beta-cryptoxanthin, which can reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, according to certain studies.

In addition, watermelon has a very high lycopene content. Lycopene is an antioxidant.

Watermelon is around 92 per cent water, meaning it is also very good for hydration.

Grapes contain a compound called resveratrol, which is a potent anti-inflammatory.

Studies have shown resveratrol acts on the same cellular targets as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Resveratrol is also the compound found in red wine which improves the function of blood vessels.

“Researchers are studying its [resveratrol’s] potential for improving symptoms of osteoarthritis, as well as for other chronic diseases linked to ageing,” said the arthritis expert.
